US President Donald Trump has deployed nearly 50,000 troops to the war against Iran, deploying them on aircraft carriers, destroyers, Marine expeditionary units, and fighter jets. Carrying parachutes and survival kits, they are part of Trump’s stated mission against Iran "to destroy their missiles and wipe out their missile industry." The US military is currently on alert in the region, while the White House is sending conflicting signals about the status of military operations, according to The New York Times . For example, Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Operation Epic Fury to be over. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, meanwhile, explained that efforts were soon focused on helping ships transit the Strait of Hormuz, although Trump later clarified that even these efforts had been suspended. The American president then wrote that he would end the war and ensure safe passage for ships through the strait if Iran "agreed to give what was agreed upon," without elaborating. He added, "If they don’t agree, the bombing will begin." The media reports that the US Navy continues to enforce a blockade of all shipping to and from Iranian ports, imposed after Iran effectively closed the strait. On Wednesday, a Navy warplane disabled an Iranian-flagged oil tanker attempting to breach the blockade. Before the war began in February, there were typically about 40,000 American troops stationed at bases and ships across the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. But as Trump escalated the war, that number rose to more than 50,000, the report states.
The exact number is difficult to determine because Iran retaliated by attacking US bases, forcing the military to redeploy troops to other bases and locations, including within the region, in Europe, and even in the United States. Here’s an overview of the American forces still assigned to the region. About 2,000 paratroopers from the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division are in the Middle East—Defense Department officials did not specify where—as part of a buildup. These troops could be used in an attempt to seize Kharg Island, the hub of Iranian oil exports, although they would require more ground forces to hold it, officials noted. Such an operation would also carry the risk of U.S. casualties. Or these troops could be part of an operation to seize the airfield, military experts explained, although it remains unclear what the United States would do with the airfield in Iran after it was captured. Holding that kind of territory in a country about a quarter the size of the continental United States and with a population of more than 90 million people would be difficult, journalists note. The arrival of 2,500 Marines and another 2,500 sailors helped keep the number of American troops in the region at more than 50,000. While it’s still unclear what Marines from the 31st Expeditionary Unit might do, U.S. officials have emphasized that they could also be involved in an operation to seize an island or other territory. Several hundred U.S. Special Operations forces arrived in the Middle East in March as part of a deployment designed to give Trump additional options, two U.S. military officials recently said. It is expected that special forces will enter Tehran. As specialized ground forces, they could be used in a mission targeting Iran’s highly enriched uranium at the Isfahan nuclear facility. The USS Abraham Lincoln and USS George HW Bush carrier strike groups, along with their accompanying flotillas of warships and more than 10,000 sailors and Marines, are stationed in the Arabian Sea. From there, they can launch strikes on Iran using carrier-launched missiles and fighter jets. The carrier Bush has replaced the USS Gerald Ford, which is heading to the Atlantic Ocean and ultimately back to Norfolk, Virginia, according to a U.S. official. Ford suffered a laundry fire early in the war.
