By the end of the fourth year of full-scale war, Russia has found itself in a threatening situation. The country is on the brink of a "perfect storm," in which all problems will merge into one major catastrophe. Well-known Russian Z-blogger and "angry patriot" Maxim Kalashnikov wrote about this in his blog. " This is already a crisis of Russian statehood. A ‘perfect storm’ is forming during a stupidly drawn-out war. All crises are converging into a parallax. The war has become a deadly quagmire… Now there will be a violent storm. Disaster is approaching. The current era, which began during the terrible crisis of the Russian Federation in 1999, is ending in a terrible crisis ," Kalashnikov wrote. Commenting on the blocking of the popular messaging app Telegram in Russia, he expressed confidence that the authorities are strengthening censorship due to impending "unpopular decisions." In effect, the Kremlin is depriving Russians of the ability to coordinate in an attempt to prevent mass uprisings. Such decisions could include a new mass mobilization to "finish off the pressure on Ukraine," the confiscation of Russian bank deposits, or a peace agreement with Ukraine that would capitulate Russia. Against the backdrop of the acute systemic crisis unfolding in Russia, any such move could be explosive. Kalashnikov believes that Russia could suffer the same fate as the Russian Empire or the USSR. " If the economy collapses, cutting off Telegram and all communications won’t help. Both the elite and the security forces will begin to disintegrate ," Kalashnikov opined.
The Russian economy has entered a critical phase of degradation, from which recovery without a new crisis is becoming increasingly unlikely, writes The Economist , comparing Russia’s current state to the so-called "death zone" —a level where the system’s exhaustion occurs faster than recovery. We’re not talking about a sudden collapse, but a far more dangerous scenario. The economy is still formally functioning, but it’s gradually eroding its own foundations. A complete collapse may not occur, but the chances of a full recovery are virtually nonexistent. The financial picture looks increasingly alarming. Russia’s budget deficit has reached 5.6 trillion rubles, the highest level since the pandemic. Interest payments on the government debt already exceed combined spending on education and healthcare. The commodity market is exerting additional pressure. Russian Urals crude is trading at a 25-30% discount to Brent, leading to a decline in export revenues. In January, budget revenues from the oil and gas sector almost halved. The expert points to a structural problem: even a hypothetical end to the war does not guarantee stabilization. A smooth demobilization of the economy would require a confluence of several factors: from the lifting of sanctions to a large-scale restructuring of the domestic market. The likelihood of such a scenario is estimated as close to zero. At the same time, prolonging the conflict only exacerbates systemic risks. Every additional year of war increases the likelihood of severe consequences, from financial shocks to institutional crises. Russia is technically capable of continuing the war, but its economic model, based on militarization and debt, is increasingly showing signs of exhaustion. The question is no longer one of growth rates, but of the system’s sustainability limits.
