Portugal is facing a series of wildfires during another summer heatwave. According to Associated Press on Wednesday morning two fires were considered of concern with over 3,300 firefighters on the ground, 1,000 fire engines and 29 aerial resources. Portugal has been experiencing a heat wave in recent days with temperatures closer to 40 degrees. In the northern part of the country, close to the border with Spain, a fire that started on Saturday night has been burning for several days, threatening villages and the natural protected area of Gerês. Meantime late Monday, in the central region of the country another fire started in Arouca and spread very quickly due to the strong winds and high temperatures. Wildfires are frequent in Portugal particularly in rural areas. In 2024 at least 5 deaths were linked directly with the fires and dozens of people were injured. In 2017 Portugal was devastated by massive fires that killed over 120 people.
