Ukraine’s drone strike on Tuapse oil refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region has contaminated the Black Sea with petroleum products, local authorities reported on Monday. According to officials, the April 16 drone attack on the refinery in Tuapse, which is one of the largest oil refineries in Russia, caused a spill of oil products. A satellite image taken on April 19 reportedly showed an oil slick about 1.5 miles offshore. Authorities estimated the contaminated area at roughly 10,000 square meters. Floating containment booms were deployed, and six vessels from the Tuapse port were involved in cleanup operations. According to regional operational headquarters, the strike on the port led to oil products leaking into the Tuapse River. Around 750 meters of booms and specialized recovery equipment have been installed to contain and collect the pollution. The port attack triggered a major fire, which officials said was only brought under control by the afternoon of April 19. Overnight into April 20, the port was targeted again by drones, sparking another fire, regional authorities reported. Earlier in April, another oil slick was discovered near the coast of Anapa. At that time, officials said more than 200 birds were found dead or injured along the shoreline on April 11–12 due to petroleum contamination. Authorities suggested the spill could have been linked to Ukrainian drone strikes on civilian vessels in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Environmental group Transparent World reported that the tanker Sofia was present in the area of the spill. According to the outlet “Verstka,” the vessel is believed to be part of a so-called shadow fleet used to transport Russian oil in circumventing sanctions. The group did not specify the exact cause of the leak. Ukrainian officials have previously said they targeted such tankers, including in the Black Sea.
