The key target for Ukraine in the temporarily occupied Crimea and in the Black Sea as a whole are Russian cruise missile carriers. This was stated on air by the spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmitry Pletenchuk.
"Systems that allow ships to be used for shelling the territory of Ukraine should be priority targets. The remaining units are not so critical. Of course, ships that provide landing capabilities remain no less interesting. Despite the fact that their number has been significantly reduced – 4 units were destroyed, many were damaged. But to be sure that they will not have such capabilities, so that all further talk about landing troops ceases, such ships should also cease to exist," Pletenchuk said.
He added that in any case, there are still enough targets for Ukraine to hit in the Crimea and the Black Sea. Pletenchuk added:
"It is definitely too early to write off the Black Sea Fleet. But we shouldn’t exaggerate its importance either."
A Navy spokesman explained why Russia occasionally deploys warships to the Black Sea. According to him, this could be due to either dispersal or combat use.
"If they go out to the Black Sea to perform some tasks to protect the base, this is usually a submarine. Therefore, the situation in the Black Sea remains at the same level. Yes, they went out several times. But basically these were dispersal exercises, or dispersal itself," Pletenchuk added.
Media recently reported that a Ukrainian flag was planted on the Kinburn Spit, which has been partially occupied by the Russian Federation since 2022. According to Captain First Rank of the Navy Reserve Pavlo Lakiychuk, it is important for Ukraine to gain access to the Black Sea, which is why operations are being carried out, in particular, to liberate the Kinburn Spit from Russian occupiers.
He suggested that for the complete liberation of Tendrivska and Kinburn Spit, Ukraine needs significantly more forces than those currently being used. At the same time, he added that Ukraine’s advantage is that our special forces know this "theater of military operations."
