Following the drone crash at Nakhchivan Airport, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev convened a Security Council meeting and called the incident a terrorist attack. This was reported on the Azerbaijani president’s website.
" Iran committed a terrorist attack against Azerbaijani territory, against the Azerbaijani state. The territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic was shelled by Iran using unmanned aerial vehicles," the statement read.
The President added that Azerbaijan strongly condemns this terrorist attack and that those responsible must be "immediately held accountable." According to the head of state, Iranian officials must provide the Azerbaijani side with a comprehensive explanation and apologize, and all those involved in the crime must be held criminally accountable.
"This is not the first time the Iranian state has committed terrorist acts against Azerbaijan and Azerbaijanis," Aliyev stated. He also recalled that in 2023, the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran was attacked. Then, according to him, an individual acting on orders from Iranian intelligence services committed a terrorist attack against Azerbaijani citizens.
"The people of Azerbaijan must be confident that any evil force will see our iron fist against them," Aliyev said.
“The Iranian side has been repeatedly informed, especially after the clashes that took place last year, that the territory of Azerbaijan will not be used against any neighboring state. We will not allow this, just as we have never allowed it to happen before. True, in the summer of last year and after that, Iran made groundless accusations against us. Media resources controlled by Iranian state structures were conducting an ugly, slanderous campaign against Azerbaijan in order to tarnish Azerbaijan and change the opinion of our compatriots living in Iran. Because they know very well that today the independent Azerbaijani state is also a place of hope for many Azerbaijanis living in Iran. In other words, tarnishing us, slandering us, and discrediting us was the goal of the Iranian public. Because there was no basis for this. Azerbaijan did not and will not participate in operations against Iran either then or this time. Because this is our position. We have no interest in conducting any operations against our neighboring countries, nor does our policy allow it. We are protecting and have protected our territorial integrity. Just as we have put an end to the Armenian occupation, we are ready to show our strength against any evil force, and Iran should not forget this”, he added.
He told that to strike Nakhchivan is ugly, cowardly, and shameless. “This stain will never be erased from their ugly and ugly face. Therefore, all necessary measures will be taken through diplomatic channels. Our Armed Forces – the Ministry of Defense, the State Border Service, and all other Special Forces have been put on the number one mobilization and must be ready to carry out any operation. We will inform the people of Azerbaijan about the progress of the processes. The statement of the Ministry of Defense has already been published in the press. The people of Azerbaijan should be sure that any evil force will see our "Iron Fist" against them”, he added.
