US intelligence agencies claim that China is secretly testing next-generation nuclear weapons and is seeking to dramatically modernize its arsenal, CNN reports, citing informed intelligence sources.

According to sources, at least one secret test took place in June 2020 at the Lop Nur test site, despite a self-imposed moratorium on nuclear testing since 1996.

US intelligence officials believe China is developing multiple-warhead missiles and low-yield tactical nuclear weapons for potential use in regional conflicts, particularly in Taiwan defense scenarios. This modernization brings Beijing closer to the level of Russia and the United States and creates potential new capabilities for the use of nuclear weapons in crisis situations.

Chinese officials deny the accusations, calling them "political manipulation" and "groundless." In response to CNN’s inquiry, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington stated that the country adheres to a "no-first-use" policy and a moratorium on testing.

American experts believe that the rapid expansion and modernization of China’s nuclear forces demonstrates Beijing’s ambitions for strategic competition with the United States and the need to ensure the reliability of its own arsenal. The disclosure of details about the 2020 tests comes amid US diplomatic efforts to engage China in new arms control agreements and curb nuclear expansion. China is actively constructing hidden nuclear complexes in remote mountain valleys in the southwestern province of Sichuan. According to The New York Times, one of the key sites that has attracted attention is the Jitong Valley, where Chinese engineers are constructing new bunkers and defensive embankments.

Satellite data shows numerous pipes indicating the handling of highly hazardous materials – likely the production of conventional explosives used as detonators in nuclear warheads.

Another facility, Pingtong, surrounded by a double fence, specializes in the production of plutonium-loaded nuclear warheads. The central structure, with its 117-meter-tall ventilation stack, was recently renovated, with new vents and heat dissipators added. Active construction continues nearby, and above the entrance is a giant inscription of Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s words: "Remain true to the founding cause and always remember our mission." This slogan, visible from space, symbolizes the ideological basis of nuclear expansion. These complexes are just part of a network of secret facilities created back in the 1960s as part of Mao Zedong’s "Third Front" project. Back then, tens of thousands of scientists carved out laboratories in the mountains to protect the nuclear program from US or Soviet attacks. After the détente of the 1980s, many of them were scaled back, but modernization has accelerated since 2019.

"The changes we see at these sites are consistent with China’s broader goals of becoming a global superpower. Nuclear weapons are an integral part of that," notes Rennie Babiarz, a geospatial intelligence expert.

The Pentagon estimates that China already has over 600 warheads and plans to double that number by 2030. While this is smaller than the arsenals of the US or Russia, the increase has raised alarm in Washington. Deputy Secretary of State Thomas G. DiNanno accused Beijing of secret nuclear tests that violate the global moratorium.
