The CIA employed a classified system known as “Ghost Murmur” during a covert operation to rescue a downed pilot in Iran, New York Post reported, citing unnamed sources. The system is described as an advanced detection technology that allegedly combines long-range quantum magnetometry with artificial intelligence. It is said to identify the subtle electromagnetic “signature” produced by a human heartbeat and then filter that signal from surrounding environmental noise using AI-based analysis. The name itself is reportedly symbolic: “murmur” refers to cardiac rhythms in medical terminology, while “ghost” reflects the challenge of locating a person who has effectively vanished in a vast environment. Reportedly, officials have not clarified whether the system has any offensive military applications beyond search-and-rescue roles. The technology was allegedly used operationally for the first time during this mission, with indirect references made during briefings involving US President Donald Trump and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. One source familiar with the program told the publication that the system’s capability could be compared to detecting a single voice in an enormous stadium, except the “stadium” in this case is a desert spanning thousands of square miles. The source added that under favorable conditions, even faint cardiac signals could potentially be detected at extreme distances. The technology is said to have been developed by Skunk Works, the advanced development division of Lockheed Martin, which specializes in highly classified aerospace and defense projects. Reports also suggest it has been tested on platforms such as Black Hawk helicopters and could eventually be adapted for use on fighter jets like the F-35. Iran’s desert terrain was reportedly considered ideal for the first operational deployment due to minimal electromagnetic interference and the absence of competing background signals, creating unusually favorable conditions for signal detection. Sources further explained that, under normal circumstances, a human heartbeat generates signals so weak that they can only be measured at very close range with medical-grade sensors. However, recent breakthroughs in quantum magnetometry—particularly sensors using microscopic defects in engineered diamonds—are said to have dramatically increased detection range, making long-distance identification theoretically possible. The turning point in the two-day rescue mission allegedly came when Ghost Murmur helped narrow down the pilot’s location. This was reportedly used alongside a standard Combat Survivor Evader Locator beacon, with both systems working in tandem: one providing a broad area estimate and the other confirming a precise position. CIA Director Ratcliffe previously stated that the operation relied on highly specialized technologies unavailable to other intelligence agencies, comparing the search effort to finding a single grain of sand in an entire desert. Donald Trump also described the mission as one of the most daring rescue operations in US military history, saying that dozens of aircraft equipped with advanced weaponry were deployed during the effort. Reports from Axios further indicated that special forces were involved on the ground, with the mission conducted under air cover.
