The Russian Black Sea Fleet is attempting to strengthen its ships’ defenses against Ukrainian drones by installing so-called "mangals"—metal mesh structures attached to the hull. One such system was spotted on the Project 21980 Grachonok boat. Footage of the system was distributed by Russian Z-channels. According to the publication, one of the boats of this type, deployed to protect the Crimean Bridge, was hit by Ukrainian forces in late April. Presumably, following this incident, Russian command decided to equip the patrol boats with additional protection. In addition, two new platforms with Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft systems were spotted on the Crimean Bridge itself.

Russian troops began installing such "barbecues" en masse on armored vehicles during the first months of the full-scale war, hoping to protect them from attack drones. However, this measure proved largely ineffective.

With drone activity on the rise, the use of tanks and other heavy armored vehicles on the front lines has become significantly more limited, forcing the Russian military to seek new ways to protect its equipment from air attacks.

The “Grachonok”-class boats are used by Russia to patrol and secure waters surrounding the Kerch Bridge, the key logistics connection between occupied Crimea and Russia.

The visible modifications follow several recent Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian patrol boats operating in the area.

According to the Ukrainian Navy on April 30, Ukrainian naval drones struck two Russian vessels guarding the Kerch Bridge during a nighttime operation in occupied Crimea. The attack reportedly damaged a Project 21980 “Grachonok” anti-sabotage boat and a Project 12200 “Sobol” patrol boat.

Footage released after the strike showed Ukrainian uncrewed surface vessels approaching Russian boats at high speed before impact. Ukrainian officials stated the targeted vessels were responsible for protecting the maritime zone around the bridge.

The strike on the “Grachonok” boat killed nine Russian servicemen and injured two others. The reported casualty count exceeded the standard crew size of the vessel, suggesting additional personnel may have been onboard during the attack. The reported number of casualties exceeds the standard crew size of six for a “Grachonok”-class boat, suggesting additional personnel—potentially divers or extra armed crew—may have been on board at the time of the strike. The same attack is also reported to have damaged a Russian Federal Security Service patrol boat of the Project 12200 “Sobol” class, which operates alongside naval units in coastal security roles. Both vessels were deployed to protect the Kerch Bridge, a key logistics link between Russia and occupied Crimea.

Project 21980 “Grachonok” boats are designed for anti-sabotage missions, including the protection of naval bases and critical maritime infrastructure. They are equipped with hydroacoustic systems such as “Kalmar” and “Anapa” for underwater surveillance and diver detection. Their armament typically includes a 14.5 mm machine gun mount, DP-65A and DP-64 anti-diver grenade launchers, and portable air defense systems like Igla or Verba. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is estimated to operate several “Grachonok”-class boats, with additional units assigned to the FSB Border Service in the southern region.

The Project 12200 “Sobol” patrol boats, developed for high-speed interception and coastal patrol missions, can reach speeds of up to 48 knots and remain operational at sea for up to three days. These vessels are also armed with heavy machine guns and are used to enforce maritime security in the Black Sea and Azov regions.
