Comprehensive preparations for a perimeter defense are underway in Odesa and the surrounding region. This includes the creation of a large-scale fortification system and the involvement of thousands of local residents as part of a national resistance program. This was announced by Denis Nosikov, Head of the Regional Directorate of the Territorial Defense Forces "South." According to him, the system has anti-tank ditches, hedgehogs, various traps and snares, mine-explosive obstacles, and low-visibility engineering barriers. "I can’t go into detail about everything, but it’s a powerful and large-scale system. No one will just walk in here—that would be impossible," Nosikov noted. The military man added that the number of volunteer units in territorial communities is currently being expanded, recruiting local residents from their districts and communities. He explained that these units are not part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but their members have the right to bear and use weapons. "They are our additional resource. They carry out their combat missions within the framework of combat orders. These are students, retirees, and many people who, due to health reasons, cannot join the Armed Forces and perform the corresponding tasks there," the speaker emphasized. According to Nosikov, a parallel program to prepare people for national resistance is being implemented, with training conducted at training grounds and with instructors. He noted that thousands of people have already been recruited, who could defend Odesa if necessary. "Our enemy’s rhetoric and sentiment regarding Odesa as a ‘Russian city’ or something similar will change over time. That’s all," the soldier assured. Furthermore, Odesa is protected from the skies by a comprehensive system. In addition to the usual mobile groups, specialized interceptor crews patrol the skies. So far, these defenders have shot down up to 80% of Russian drones. "Currently, we’re shooting down 70-80% of ‘shahids.’ That’s a very significant efficiency gain. I think we’ll soon achieve a 99.9% success rate," Nosikov notes. As a reminder, throughout December 2025, Russia intensified its attacks on Odesa and the surrounding region. Specifically, not only the energy sector but also ports were targeted. Moscow is now increasing its influence over ships in the Black Sea and preparing for massive strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure using new naval drones. "Let’s start with the fact that our enemy has had unmanned naval systems since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, and it’s hard to say they’ve developed anything completely new. So far, Russia hasn’t observed any widespread use of naval drones," Dmytro Pletenchuk , a representative of the Ukrainian Navy, told. He adds that there are many reasons for using such drones, and that Russia has already attempted to do so, but without any specific scale.
"This may be because the Russians are lagging behind us in the use of these types of weapons systems and are trying to catch up. Ukraine has made numerous successful deployments, and everyone remembers them well. Meanwhile, our enemy, even with its greater capabilities and capabilities, doesn’t use naval drones on a large scale," Pletenchuk notes.
It’s worth noting that military analyst Ivan Timochko notes that, in addition to Odesa, Russia has another target in southern Ukraine: the village of Zatoka. The enemy seeks to pose a threat to Moldova and maintain its forces in Transnistria.
