The Russian offensive in eastern and southern Ukraine has continued throughout 2025, with much of the fighting over the past 12 months focused on the devastated cities of eastern Donetsk and northeastern Kharkiv regions.
However, as ABC News reports , in September, Russian occupiers began a fairly rapid advance through rural areas east of Zaporizhzhia, advancing up to 10 km, as territorial defense units that had held this territory for years were unable to withstand the sudden and intense offensive of the Russian army.
Among the Ukrainian units deployed in this direction to contain the Russian Federation was the 225th Separate Assault Regiment, which had previously repelled Russian attacks in the Sumy region. "The situation there remains difficult, and we’re trying to stabilize it. It’s a mistake to think it’s 100% stabilized," Major Oleg Shiryaev of the 225th Regiment emphasized in a phone conversation with ABC News.
As ABC News notes, the Kremlin is seeking to use the gradual seizure of new territories to influence peace talks to end the war.
"The space for freedom of decision-making is shrinking as we lose territory," Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said in November.
At the same time, Ukrainian Major Shiryaev noted that in the trenches, ditches, and forest belts along the line of contact, his unit is focused on survival. At the same time, it is also destroying the Russians here. "Personally, I’m skeptical of any peace negotiations. Even if some kind of peace agreement is signed, Russia will not cease to exist and will not cease to be our enemy," he emphasized.
He believes that any agreement "will simply give Russia time to regroup."
