As Ukraine’s long-range capabilities expand, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s fears grow. Additional air defense towers have been discovered near his famous Valdai residence, located 600 km from Ukraine. Radio Liberty reported this, citing fresh satellite images.
An analysis of satellite data and Yandex panoramas revealed six additional towers housing anti-aircraft systems. This brings the number of known air defense installations guarding the area around the complex to twenty. The Valdai residence has long been one of the Russian dictator’s key refuges. Journalists have previously documented that Putin spends a significant portion of his time here. An office has been built within the complex, replicating the interior of his office in the Kremlin. According to investigators, his mistress, Alina Kabaeva, and his sons also regularly reside there, further explaining the unusually high level of security measures. Such a large-scale deployment of air defense systems appears unprecedented. Ukrainian long-range attack drones regularly attack targets behind Russian lines. These strikes include military bases, oil refineries, oil depots, and other critical infrastructure that Russia considered untouchable.
In February 2023, the investigative site Proekt reported that a dedicated home for Kabaeva had been built next to the Valdai residence, complete with its own private railway spur.
The Kremlin has long denied any relationship between Putin, 72, and Kabaeva, 42, though the two have been romantically linked in the media for over a decade.
According to the Telegram channel VChK-OGPU, the first Pantsir systems at Valdai were brought in from St. Petersburg.
That redeployment, the channel claimed, left the northern city more vulnerable and may have allowed Ukrainian forces to carry out successful drone strikes on local energy infrastructure.
Media previously reported that Putin fled from Ukrainian drones to a fake office in Valdai in exchange for 13 Pantsir anti-aircraft missile and gun systems. According to journalists from the Sistema project , the Kremlin dictator held 29 of his 30 meetings from 2024 to 2025 from his office in Valdai. The media dubbed the Valdai residence the most secure, surrounded by 14 air defense systems, 13 of which are Pantsir air defense missile and gun systems. The article cited as an example the March 28, 2018, meeting following the fire at the Zimnyaya Vishnya shopping center (60 dead).
