The Defense Forces don’t sink Russian ships during strikes because they lack the capability. This was stated by Andriy Ryzhenko, retired Captain 1st Rank and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Navy, on Radio NV , commenting on Ukrainian attacks on large Russian landing ships in Crimea.

"If we had the opportunity, we would have sunk it the same way as the others. But to sink it, you need cruise missiles or ATACMS missiles. If such a missile hits a ship like that, it will, of course, sink. But I understand they don’t have those. Either they have a very limited supply, or perhaps they’re being kept for other purposes. That’s why they use drones. There are plenty of them," Ryzhenko said.

He added that a unique feature of drones is that they can carry a relatively small warhead. Another problem is that drones deliver contact strikes on targets. "That is, when an object is struck, a direct contact explosion occurs. Typically, such an explosion causes damage to the object. But this damage is not maximal. A penetrating explosion is considered the most effective. When a missile enters the interior of a ship and detonates there. But we strike with what we have in our arsenal," Ryzhenko added.

He explained that such strikes also have an effect, causing damage to Russian ships. However, according to the expert, it doesn’t take Russia long to restore its vessels after such attacks.

"I think it would take hours or days to weld up any damage. There could indeed be damage to the electronics, but on ships like the 1171 or 775, there’s very little of it. I’d like to remind you that these ships are at least 40 years old, and the Yamal, I think, is almost 60. Back when they were built, the word ‘electronics’ wasn’t as common as it is now," Ryzhenko explained. "That is, when an object is struck, a direct contact explosion occurs. Recently, two naval kamikaze drones successfully hit the sanctioned tanker MARQUISE in the Black Sea, according to General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces .

"Aunit of the Ukrainian Naval Forces, using two MBEK kamikazes, hit the sanctioned vessel "MARQUISE", the statement reads.

Specifically, at the time of the attack, the vessel was adrift, 210 km southeast of the city of Tuapse, Russia, without an automatic identification system signal. It is believed that the vessel was awaiting loading from another vessel at sea. As the General Staff clarified, the ship was hit in the stern, in the area of the propeller-rudder group and the engine room.

The tanker "MARQUISE" is under sanctions from Ukraine, Great Britain, the European Union, Switzerland, New Zealand and Canada and was used by the enemy for the illegal transportation of petroleum products.
