Russian pro-war bloggers are increasingly acknowledging that the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ new tactics have seriously complicated the Russian army’s offensive operations and led to increased casualties. In the Z-segment, this is already being called an "endless meat grinder," which discourages even motivated units from advancing.
One such signal was published by blogger Chadayev. According to him, Ukraine is increasingly waging a "second-string" battle, not attempting to attack everywhere, but rather turning every Russian advance into a costly and bloody process for the aggressor country. The essence of this tactic is that the Ukrainian Armed Forces prepare "kill zones" in advance, where advancing Russian units find themselves under fire from multiple weapons. Ukrainian artillery is reportedly positioned deep within the defenses, out of reach of Russian drones, and targets its own forward edge in advance. As soon as Russian assault groups occupy supposedly abandoned positions, they are subjected to precision strikes. Meanwhile, drones are actively deployed, targeting logistics, supply routes, and any activity near captured strongholds. The picture is further complicated by dense mining, including remote mining, and ambushes along the few supply routes. Russia’s attempts to bring up the second echelon or reinforce its positions often end in local counterattacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, aimed at maintaining that same zone of constant losses between the front and rear. Chadayev admits that this is causing Russian commanders at various levels to increasingly lose the will to advance: advances are measured not in kilometers, but in lost men. As a result, he says, Russia is increasingly "painting over maps" as a formality to report on its successes.
