Europe’s political shift explained | News In Depth

Stuart Dowell explains it’s hard applying one clear trend across Europe, saying it’s “difficult to apply some kind of overarching narrative” because each country represents something different. He highlights that in France and Germany, right-wing parties are hitting limits, noting “the ceiling might exist,” but at the same time “the floor… is also rising,” meaning their support is growing steadily. In Germany, he emphasizes that the real story is the collapse of the Social Democrats, whose support is “cratering,” while the AfD has gained more stable, policy-driven voters. Dowell also points out that this support is no longer just protest-based, stressing that AfD voters are now “policy driven,” which makes them harder to win back. In France, he explains that despite strong gains, the National Rally is still blocked by alliances of other parties, showing how political “firewalls” continue to limit their power. Overall, he suggests Europe is becoming more fragmented and uncertain, with rising support for new forces but no single direction dominating the political landscape.
