A powerful flood caused by heavy rains in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan has led to the rupture of the Qejux reservoir dam, Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations reported. As a result, nearby villages were submerged. Bridges and roads were destroyed, and vehicles were swept away. In the Derbent district, more than 4,000 people were evacuated. Many homes collapsed completely under the pressure of the water. At least five people have died, and the number of victims is expected to rise. Temporary shelters have been set up to accommodate the evacuated residents. According to the regional health ministry, one woman died after her home was destroyed by a landslide in the southern village of Kirki. In a separate incident, another woman and a child lost their lives after being carried away by rapidly rising floodwaters.
Later the same day, authorities confirmed that two children also drowned when a vehicle they were in became submerged in water.
