A court in Russia on Monday convicted the former governor of Russia’s Kursk region Alexei Smirnov of corruption charges and sentenced him to 14 years in prison and a fine of 400 million rubles. According to Associated Press Smirnov oversaw the region on the border with Ukraine between May and December 2024. In August 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a surprise incursion into the region. In the stunning attack, Ukraine’s battle-hardened mechanized units quickly overwhelmed the lightly armed Russian border guards and army conscripts. Hundreds were taken prisoner. The Russian military had announced its troops had fully reclaimed the border territory in April 2025 — nearly nine months after losing chunks of the region.
Smirnov was arrested that same month.
