Ukraine has received billions of dollars from exports via the Black Sea maritime corridor, which was restored after the Russian blockade was broken, according to a research note from the Polish Institute of International Affairs.
According to analysts, in July 2023, Ukraine managed to break the Russian maritime blockade and resume the operation of a key transport route that partially passes through the territorial waters of Romania and Bulgaria. By 2024, almost half of the total export value of Ukrainian goods – worth about $20.8 billion – came from maritime transport.
However, Ukrainian maritime trade has not yet reached the level of 2021, when the share of maritime exports was about 62% of the total volume, approximately $42 billion.
The analytical note emphasizes that Ukraine’s success was made possible by the active use of naval drones and missile strikes, as a result of which the main part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was driven out of Crimea to Novorossiysk.
“Ukrainian military actions not only allowed the restoration of Black Sea trade, but also reduced the risk of a Russian landing in southern Ukraine, as well as a breakthrough in Transnistria, thereby reducing the threat to Moldova”, the publication says.
NATO analysts are calling for a further strengthening of Ukraine’s military capabilities at sea, especially in the context of the growing number of Russian air attacks that threaten port infrastructure and complicate export operations.
Striletska Bay near Sevastopol, once a key base for Russian warships in occupied Crimea, is now nearly empty and used primarily for mooring tugboats and small patrol craft, the Atesh partisan group reported recently. According to the group, Russia now uses the bay mainly for maintenance work and rare anti-sabotage defense drills, having pulled most major vessels from the area. "Recently, the bay has been practically empty… The degradation of the occupation fleet in Sevastopol is becoming increasingly obvious. Striletska Bay, which previously housed a large number of combat vessels, is now idle." Atesh said. The remaining combat units are periodically rotated and redeployed in an apparent effort to avoid detection by Ukrainian reconnaissance. "Every object is under control — no ship will go unnoticed," Atesh said, adding that all ship movements are being tracked and shared with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Sevastopol has served as the base for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. Repeated Ukrainian attacks using naval drones, missiles, and long-range drones have forced the Kremlin to reduce its naval presence in occupied Crimea.
Ukraine has destroyed several Russian vessels, including the Caesar Kunikov landing ship, the Sergei Kotov patrol ship, the Ivanovets missile corvette, and multiple high-speed landing crafts.
The shrinking Russian presence in Sevastopol comes as Ukraine steps up drone attacks against other Black Sea Fleet locations
