Around 25 mosques have been set on fire in Iran’s capital Tehran as the nationwide, protests continue the second week, according to official Iranian reports. The report came as footage emerged on social media of a mosque burning on the streets of Tehran. One burnt mosque is Al Rasool Mosque in Tehran, where Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei once led prayers and is a major symbol for the Iranian regime. Mosques are seen as a symbol of the Islamic Republic against which protesters have been rallying for the fourteenth consecutive day. Demonstrators are attacking other buildings and facilities. Apart from mosques, protesters have also torched and damaged 24 houses, 26 banks, two hospitals, numerous buses and ambulances, according to Tehran Mayor Ali Reza Zakani. Law enforcement posts and headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps militia Basij have also come under attack. In a statement on Friday, Zakani stated that some groups within the demonstrators also destroyed buses, fire engines, and 42 vehicles. Zakani added that emergency response teams are working to repair the damage in the capital. He accused what he described as "foreign enemies" of using Tehran’s children and young people to inflict damage on public property. Merchants began staging protests in central Tehran on December 29 over record inflation and sharp devaluation of the national currency. Soon the economic protest morphed into a political movement, with rioters demanding that the government be overthrown and Iran’s exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi is brought to power.
