Hundreds of people gathered on bridges in Iran on Tuesday as they answered the government’s call to form human chains to protect the country’s infrastructure. According to Associated Press footage showed crowds gathered on the White Bridge in Ahvaz and on the historic bridge of Dezful. Earlier, Iranian official Alireza Rahimi issued a video message calling on “all young people, athletes, artists, students and university students and their professors” to form human chains around power plants.
It comes as U.S. President Donald Trump warned that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Tehran does not meet his latest deadline to agree to a deal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Facing the looming deadline, Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday that 14 million Iranians, including himself, had volunteered to sacrifice their lives in the war. Pezeshkian made the comment on X just ahead of Trump’s deadline to bomb power stations and bridges in Iran if it doesn’t loosen its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz. Iranians have formed human chains in the past around nuclear sites at times of heightened tensions with the West. Some images of people surrounding power plants were posted by local Iranian media Tuesday, though it was unclear how widespread the practice was or if the photos were simply brief shows of government-encouraged defiance.
