Azerbaijan’s intelligence agency, State Security Service, has prevented terrorist and sabotage acts planned by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC. In a statement released on Friday, the Security Service revealed that the IRGC thought to target strategic facilities in Azerbaijan, such as Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan oil pipeline, the Israeli Embassy in Azerbaijan, one of the leaders of the Mountain Jewish religious community, and the “Ashkenazi” synagogue. The goal was to create panic among the public and damage the international reputation of the country, the agency said. The investigation launched by the State Security Service revealed that three explosive devices had been smuggled into Azerbaijan but were neutralized and their transfer to another individual was prevented. Operational and investigative measures were also carried out by the agency to identify the strategic facilities and targets of interest to Iranian intelligence services in the country, as well as the individualscooperating with them. It was established that citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Behnam Sahibali Rustamzadeh and Yaser Rahim Zankiyan, had conspired in advance and established criminal contact with Tarkhan Terlanoglu Guliyev in order to smuggle explosive devices into the country. The State Security Service also shared video footage of the operation to apprehend the individual plotting the sabotage acts. The foiling of the terror plot comes a day after Iranian drones struck Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave – striking an airport and an area near a school. Four civilians were injured in the attack that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev dubbed as a “terror act” and vowed to retaliate. Aliyev urged Iranian officials to provide an explanation and apology for the attack, stressing Baku will respond to the incident. The Foreign Ministry said the country had the right to respond. The Turkish Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack on Nakhchivan. In turn, Tehran denied targeting Nakhchivan, with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi telling Azerbaijan media that the Islamic republic is "not targeting neighboring countries." He added that Iran would only take action if there are military bases in the region being used to launch attacks against the country. The attack highlighted complicated relations between Iran and Azerbaijan.
