Kaya Kallas: Azerbaijan is an important partner for the European Union

On May 5, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Kaya Kallas. During the conversation, President Ilham Aliyev’s meetings with Kaya Kallas were recalled with satisfaction, and it was noted that fruitful discussions were held on expanding cooperation during her visit to the country in 2025.
Kaya Kallas conveyed the greetings of the President of the Council of the European Union Antonio Costa to the head of state.
President Ilham Aliyev expressed gratitude for the greetings and asked to convey his greetings to Antonio Costa. Kaya Kallas touched upon the importance of the adoption of a joint statement by the head of state and the President of the Council of the European Union during Antonio Costa’s visit to the country, and the emphasis in that document on the strategic nature of relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union. The guest said that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the European Union. President Ilham Aliyev touched upon the prospects for cooperation between his country and the European Union in energy, communications, security, trade and other areas. The head of state emphasized that the European Union is one of Azerbaijan’s main trade partners, and at the same time, his country has always been a reliable partner of the European Union in terms of ensuring energy security. In this regard, the head of state noted that recently Azerbaijani gas has reached two more member states of the European Union – Germany and Austria. During the conversation, the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process was touched upon, and the steps taken by the country to strengthen the peace agenda were emphasized. It was noted that economic and trade relations have already been established between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and in this regard, it was stated that the country has unilaterally removed the restriction on transit cargo to Armenia. The participation of the President of Azerbaijan in the 8th Summit of the "European Political Union" held in Yerevan the other day in a video link format was assessed as a historic event. It was emphasized at the meeting that currently on the agenda of Azerbaijan and the European Union are issues related to digital transformation, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and cooperation in other areas.
During the conversation, the European Union’s support to Azerbaijan in the field of mine clearance was appreciated, and it was noted that the launch of the TRIPP project will create good opportunities in terms of connections in the region. The Head of State and Kaya Kallas discussed the prospects of Azerbaijan-European Union cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.
Earlier, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with Kaya Kallas.
During the one-on-one and expanded meetings between the parties, the parties reviewed in detail the current state and prospects of Azerbaijan-EU relations.
The intensity of political dialogue, the importance of high-level reciprocal visits were emphasized, and the importance of developing partnership on the basis of mutual respect, equality and common interests was noted. At the same time, the importance of dialogue mechanisms between Azerbaijan and Europe, the resumption of negotiations on a new bilateral agreement and the negotiations on the Partnership Priorities document were emphasized. During the meeting, opportunities for expanding cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy security, transport and logistics, green energy and digitalization were discussed. Azerbaijan’s contribution to Europe’s energy security and its role as a reliable partner were noted.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the other party about the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period, the rehabilitation and reconstruction work carried out by Azerbaijan, as well as the measures taken to combat the mine threat. An exchange of views was held on the normalization process with Armenia. Azerbaijan’s commitment to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region was reiterated.
The parties also exchanged views on regional and international security issues. In this context, cooperation within multilateral platforms, as well as opportunities for joint action to address global challenges, were discussed.
During the meeting, the prospects for the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU within the framework of various institutions and programs were also reviewed.
