Korean K808 APCs and KLTV Armored Vehicles Will Be Assembled in Peru

Peru has officially launched a plant that will assemble South Korean K808 wheeled armored personnel carriers and KLTV light tactical armored vehicles.

Peruvian President José Jeri announced that the project was implemented with the participation of the Army Weapons and Ammunition Factory (FAME S.A.C.) in partnership with South Korean companies.

In addition to combat vehicles, the new enterprise will organize the serial assembly of specialized vehicles, such as ambulances and patrol vehicles for security forces.

“This project not only reduces dependence on imports, but also creates jobs and strengthens Peru’s industrial base,” José Jeri said during the opening ceremony.

Back in 2023, the Peruvian government chose the South Korean company Hyundai Rotem as a supplier of 8×8 K808 armored personnel carriers for the army.

The agreement with Peru is the first export contract for this model to the Latin American market, which underscores the growing cooperation between the region and the South Korean defense industry.

The main armament of the K808 can include a rotary turret with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, a 7.62 mm-caliber machine gun, or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher to engage various targets.

The frontal part of the armored personnel carrier’s hull is designed to protect against 12.7- or 14.5-mm-caliber bullets, while the sides provide protection against 7.62-mm ammunition.

The K808’s airborne compartment is located in the rear and can accommodate 9-10 fully equipped soldiers; the crew consists of two people.

The infantry unit enters and exits through an electrically operated rear ramp, and the roof features hatches for firing and emergency exits, which increase the mobility and safety of the troops.

The vehicle has a modular design for the installation of additional weapons and special equipment, as well as protection against bullets and mines.
