The fact that even the brief ceasefire failed to hold suggests that Russia’s war against Ukraine is unlikely to end anytime soon. According to The Economist , although there has been no significant reduction in the intensity of fighting, the tide of the war is changing. It is noted that the number of Russians killed in the war remains extremely high, and their spring offensive has stalled. An analysis conducted by the publication showed that this year, for the first time since October 2023, Russia suffered small but significant territorial losses. In addition, according to journalists’ estimates, by May 12, between 280,000 and 518,000 Russian soldiers had been killed in the war, and the total number of casualties was between 1.1 and 1.5 million people. "This means that about 3% of Russia’s pre-war male population of draft age died or were wounded," the publication wrote. Journalists noted that these horrific Russian losses are occurring against a backdrop of minor gains on the front lines. They also noted that the battlefield is becoming increasingly complex due to its dispersal, as Ukrainian drones are now pursuing enemy troops far behind the front lines, making it difficult for Russian units to move to the front lines without risking being targeted. Some sources suggest that Russian troops are still making slow advances. However, the publication, citing its own analysis, indicated that Russian troops have captured approximately 220 square kilometers, or just 0.04% of Ukraine’s territory, this year. "Recently, Ukraine has begun to recapture territory. Monthly data showed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had recaptured approximately 189 square kilometers. Russia may be delaying preparations for its summer offensive. This could also be a turning point in the war," the journalists concluded. Now Russia itself is defenseless. Igor Romanenko, founder of the Close the Sky of Ukraine Charitable Foundation, lieutenant general, and former deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, recalls that Russia has built a powerful air defense system, but our drones are still getting in and carrying out attacks. Answering a question about the shelling of the Moscow region, he noted that work continues to strike Russian defense enterprises with various weapons. "Strikes are being carried out on military installations and facilities that supply various sophisticated weapons to the Russian Federation army," Romanenko said. Moreover, he emphasized, it is important to note that despite the fact that Russia has developed a powerful air and missile defense system, our drones are still penetrating and launching strikes. "This process will be further refined given the growing quantity and quality of our strike capabilities. Furthermore, our preparations for strikes are being improved. That is, from the intelligence perspective of our own and our allies, the situation in these air defense zones is being studied," the expert noted. Thus, he noted, our strike assets are reaching their targets, and “the further, the more effectively this happens.”
