Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson has described as “positive” the US-mediated meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Washington on Friday. “The meeting of the leaders of the South Caucasus republics in Washington, mediated by the American side, deserves a positive assessment. We hope that this step will help advance the peace agenda,” Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Saturday. However, Zakharova stressed that prior to Washington meeting, the two countries’ leaders had voiced their willingness to hold direct meetings without any negotiators. Aliyev and Pashinyan met in Washington on August 8 to sign a declaration ending over three decades of conflict between the two countries. A key feature of the agreement is the creation of a major corridor, named Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, linking Azerbaijan proper to its Nakhchivan exclave via southern Armenian region of Syunik. The road will also link Azerbaijan to Turkey. The road carries geopolitical importance as it boosts Washington’s influence in the South Caucasus region. Aliyev and Pashinyan also signed separate documents with the United States over the deepening of ties with Washington. Posting about the meeting in social media, Trump said the agreements would “fully unlock the potential” of the South Caucasus region.
