The operation conducted by the Ukrainian Defense Forces near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region was brilliant, Yevhen Dykyi, a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war and former company commander of the Aidar Battalion, told Radio NV.
"The Kupiansk cauldron that Putin threatened us with actually happened, but in the opposite direction. The Russians were rightfully proud of having crossed the Oskol River, and now they face the ultimate challenge of crossing it back. How can they ford the cold winter river back? But there’s an alternative—surrender," he emphasized.
According to him, the Ukrainian Defense Forces managed to completely cut off Kupyansk from the Russian Federation component located on the other side of the Oskol.
"The city was turned into a trap, a pitfall. It was a truly brilliant operation. We haven’t seen anything like this for a long time, from both sides, with so many drones and large security zones," Diky said.
The expert asserts that the enemy will now continue to press on the Donetsk region. He noted that there is currently very alarming and unpleasant news from Seversk, which is becoming the site of a Russian offensive, with some of their forces being redeployed there from other directions.
He also emphasized that the enemy’s advance was halted in Huliaipole, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The ATO veteran added:
"But it’s still too early to say that the Russians have resigned themselves to this and are transferring their forces to Donbass, or that they’ve decided to fight only for Donbass."
As reported, as a result of the successful operation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, Russian occupiers were blocked in Kupiansk and the entire northwestern outskirts of the city were cleared .
The Ukrainian monitoring project DeepState noted that the difficult and lengthy operation continues, as Russian enclaves still exist in the central part of the city.
They noted that the operation began with the creation of a blocking line and cutting off the enemy garrison in the city from the main forces.
Ukraine said it had retaken two settlements in the northern Kharkiv region and pushed Russian troops back in Kupiansk, a key railway hub that Russia claimed to have seized last month.
"Kindrashivka, Radkivka and their outskirts have been liberated, as well as a number of neighborhoods in northern Kupiansk," the Khartia army corps said on social media.
The Russian army claimed at the end of November to have again captured the city of Kupiansk, which it first seized in 2022 before Ukrainian forces retook it in the fall that year.
Russia has in recent months touted advances on the battlefield, where Ukrainian forces are on the back foot. Kyiv has repeatedly dismissed Russian claims of sweeping advances as attempts from Moscow to promote a narrative that Ukraine faces imminent collapse to influence negotiations to end the war.
Washington is now pushing Kyiv to make major territorial concessions as part of its plan to end the nearly four-year war.
"Russians operate much more effectively in the information space than any of our partners and spread information that doesn’t reflect reality," President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters.
