Russia has long used the Caspian Sea to transport military supplies. This opinion was expressed by Roman Svitan, a military expert and retired colonel in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on Radio NV, commenting on the accident involving an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea.
"Both from Iran to Russia and from Russia to Iran. This is one of the routes by which the Russians transport component parts, sometimes entire weapons—from tanks to missiles. Sanctioned military goods are then shipped through Iran and then throughout the world. One of the routes for Russian military goods moving to Venezuela is precisely this Caspian route," Svitan said.
He added that strikes against these vessels could also be carried out using naval drones. According to the expert, "it’s not a big deal" to import several unmanned boats and launch them through third countries.
"There are several countries operating in the Caspian Sea through which we could do this. One option, by the way, is Iran. We have plenty of friends there among the Kurds. Therefore, I don’t rule out the possibility of naval drones operating against targets in the Caspian. Although, from the standpoint of training and executing the combat mission, it would be more optimal to use aerial drones," Svitan added.
Earlier, it was reported that the Iranian cargo ship Rona sank in the Caspian Sea, near Turkmenistan. This vessel has repeatedly appeared in investigations examining the supply routes of weapons and sanctioned components from Iran to Russia.
It’s worth noting that Ukraine has previously attacked the Caspian Sea region . Specifically, in December, media sources reported that the SBU struck the Filanovsky oil platform, owned by Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft, halting oil production at dozens of wells in the area. It is noted that this is Ukraine’s first defeat of Russian infrastructure related to oil production in the Caspian Sea. "At least four hits on the offshore platform were recorded. The attack halted oil and gas production from more than 20 wells it services," the sources noted.
The Filanovsky field is one of the largest explored fields in Russia and the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea. Its reserves amount to 129 million tons of oil and 30 billion cubic meters of gas.
"The ‘Cotton’ operation in the Caspian Sea is yet another reminder from Russia that all its enterprises operating for war are legitimate targets, no matter where they are located," our source in the intelligence service noted.
