A landslide has forced more than 1,500 people to evacuate the town of Niscemi on the Italian island of Sicily, according to local authorities. The natural disaster occurred on Sunday evening but continued to spread throughout Monday. "It is a challenging four-kilometer front," said Niscemi’s deputy mayor Pietro Stimolo. The landslide, originating in the Santa Croci, Trappeto, and Via Popolo neighbourhoods, has formed a front stretching at least four kilometres and continues to grow. According to local media, Niscemi Mayor Massimiliano Conti cautioned that a “red zone” will be designated, preventing displaced families from returning to their homes because of the continuing danger. Authorities have labelled the situation critical, warning that conditions could deteriorate further in the coming hours. While no fatalities or injuries have been reported, key access roads are still closed and schools remain shut. About 300 families, have been moved to temporary accommodation and a local sports centre. Emergency services are working together to deliver urgent assistance, as the area risks isolation due to key roads being blocked or damaged.
