North Korea’s military on Saturday accused South Korea of flying drones across the border between the nations this week, warning that it would face consequences for its "unpardonable hysteria".
According to Associated Press North Korean forces used special electronic warfare assets last Sunday to bring down a South Korean drone flying over a border town, the General Staff of the North’s Korean People’s Army said in a statement carried by state media.
The drone was equipped with two cameras that filmed over several locations, it added.
North Korea’s KCNA news agency broadcast still images it said showed debris from the drone, and aerials shots said to have been recovered from the unmanned aerial vehicle.
The Associated Press had no independent means of verifying the date, locations or content of the images released by state media.
South Korea infiltrated another drone into North Korean airspace on 27 September before it was forced to crash following electronic strikes by North Korea, the statement said, adding that authorities found the drone also contained video data on major objects in North Korea.
“We strongly denounce the hooligans’ serial outrageous encroachment upon our sovereignty and undisguised provocative acts against us,” the North Korean statement said, adding the "military warmongers will be surely forced to pay a dear price for their unpardonable hysteria.”
South Korea quickly denied the accusation, with the Defence Ministry saying it did not operate drones during the times specified by North Korea and did not even posses the types of drones that North Korea claimed were used.
A senior spokesperson said that authorities would investigate whether civilians flew the drones found in North Korea, and stressed that South Korea had no intentions of provoking North Korea and would continue its efforts to build trust.
The North Korea accusations are likely to further dim prospects for efforts by South Korea’s liberal government to restore ties with Pyongyang.
