The Russian authorities did not acknowledge the losses incurred as a result of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ strike on the Borisoglebsk military airfield on the night of July 5. But there were losses. This was reported by the Russian opposition publication ASTRA, citing informed sources. Only a few days later it became known that as a result of the Ukrainian drone strike , Russian driver-operator Artem Ponomarenko was killed and another serviceman, Dmitry Panchenko, was injured.
According to the channel’s sources, the strike damaged a Yak-130 training aircraft and the runway. In addition, explosions were reported at warehouses containing aerial bombs, but official structures – both the Russian Defense Ministry and local authorities – continue to remain silent about the damage. Immediately after the attack, Voronezh Region Governor Alexander Gusev reported only on the downed drones: according to him, the air defense system shot down more than 25 drones, and later the Defense Ministry increased the figure to 34. Not a word about the destruction and casualties. This is far from the first attempt by the Kremlin to hide the real consequences of Ukrainian strikes on rear infrastructure. For example, a similar raid on the Borisoglebsk training aviation center took place on June 2. Then, as the media reported, two soldiers were killed, but the authorities again kept silent about the losses. Before that, in April 2024, drones also attacked the same facility. The Borisoglebsk airfield is of strategic importance: combat training aircraft are based here and pilots are trained for the Su-30SM, Su-34 and Su-35S fighters. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the strike was aimed at reducing the enemy’s aviation potential, in particular, at destroying warehouses with guided aerial bombs, which Russia uses en masse against Ukrainian cities. NASA monitoring systems have recorded a fire in the area of the airfield. Videos from the scene confirm the movement of emergency services.
Earlier, THE Lipetsk region was subjected to a massive drone attack, the main target of which was the military airfield Lipetsk-2. Lipetsk Region Governor Igor Artamonov confirmed the drone attack and announced the introduction of a "red level" threat. The Lipetsk-2 military airfield is located just 12 km from the regional center. The 4th flight crew training center is located here. The airfield is home to Su-34, Su-35 and MiG-31 aircraft. In August 2024, this airfield was already subjected to a drone attack, which resulted in damage to warehouses containing gliding aerial bombs.
