Russia’s largest oil producer, Rosneft company, has reported a dramatic decline in profitability for 2025, disclosing that its net income fell by approximately 73% over the year. The company stated that its earnings dropped to around 293 billion rubles, about $3.6 billion, attributing the downturn to a combination of high borrowing costs, elevated profit taxation, and several non-recurring financial impacts, according to reporting by Reuters. Chief executive Igor Sechin described the situation as the result of an “ideal storm” of both domestic economic pressures and external geopolitical challenges. A significant factor affecting operations has been the ongoing war in Ukraine, during which Russian energy infrastructure has repeatedly come under drone attack. Facilities linked to Rosneft, particularly in export-critical regions such as the Baltic area, have been targeted multiple times. Among these was a reported attack in December 2025 on a major facility in the Samara region, alongside frequent targeting of installations in Ryazan. In some cases, terminals and processing sites experienced repeated strikes within short periods, disrupting operations and adding uncertainty to supply chains. Russia’s Baltic export infrastructure has reportedly come under sustained pressure, with Ukrainian drone strikes damaging facilities in recent weeks. The Ust-Luga terminal, in particular, was hit multiple times within a single week, reflecting an escalation in the intensity of attacks on energy export infrastructure. The attacks have contributed to increased logistical risks and higher insurance and freight costs for oil exports. Transporting crude oil has become significantly more expensive, with shipping routes from Russian Baltic ports to key markets such as India seeing steep cost increases compared to earlier years. This has further squeezed margins even during periods of higher global oil prices. In addition, international sanctions have intensified pressure on Rosneft as well. The European Union expanded restrictions in mid-2025 by sanctioning an Indian refinery partly owned by Rosneft, while the United States imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil in October, later easing some measures in March amid shifting global energy and conflict dynamics involving Iran. Sechin further noted that a recent surge in global oil prices – linked to the US-Iran conflict and Tehran’s temporary blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route – did not translate into higher profits for Rosneft. He argued that any potential gains were offset by sharply rising operational expenses, particularly in shipping and insurance. He also highlighted a steep increase in logistics costs, stating that by March, transporting Russian crude from Baltic ports to India had climbed to over $20 per barrel, roughly ten times the cost of shipments to Europe compared with early 2022 levels. Together, these factors have reduced the company’s ability to benefit from favorable market conditions, ultimately contributing to the steep decline in its net income.
