Palestinians watched on in shock as Israel demolished a block of flats in east Jerusalem with tensions continuing to soar. According to Associated Press the block of flats, nestled in the predominately Arab neighbourhood of Silwan, used to house about 90 people, according to Ir Amim and Bimkom, organizations focused in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Jerusalem that accompanied the families over the years through legal and planning processes related to the building. Neighbors and residents watched the building being demolished in quiet horror from their balconies. The building did not have a permit and was on ground not licensed for residential use, the organizations said, but as the machinery arrived to knock down the structure residents were still applying for licensing and challenging the demolition order. Local media reported the Jerusalem Municipality as saying the demolition was carried out due to a 2014 court order and extensions were granted to residents along with various options for solutions but these were declined by residents. According to Sari Kornish, an architect and urban planner who works for the Israeli NGO Bimkom, it’s rare for Palestinians to gain permits. "The urban planning is supposed to provide for the future, it’s supposed to see people as equal, and this is the pure opposite of how I view urban planning," she said. Zuhair al Rajabbi, head of Batn al Hawa neighbourhood committee in Silwan, said his cousin’s family were expelled from their home recently. He watched Israeli settlers move in and renovate the building from his balcony. "We used to live together like we live here at home, eating and drinking with them. It makes me sad when I see their home disappearing," he said. For settlers like Daniel Luria, executive director of Ateret Cohanim, those living in area must abide by the Israeli government’s rules. "Those who want to live in a Jewish state and live according to, under a Jewish government, a Jewish lifestyle where there’s, Jewish life comes to the fore, then they’re welcome," he said. "But the second you want to drive me out and throw Molotov cocktails and change the nature of the state from a Jewish State to be something else , you’re not wanted in this country." Israel captured the West Bank and east Jerusalem — areas claimed by the Palestinians for a future state — in the 1967 war. It has settled over 500,000 Jews in the West Bank, in addition to over 200,000 in contested east Jerusalem. Israel’s government is dominated by far-right proponents of the settler movement, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Cabinet Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who oversees the nation’s police force. Settler expansion has been compounded by a surge of attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank in recent months.
Since the Israel -Hamas war erupted, tensions have increased, with more settlers’ attacks and Israeli military raids in the Palestinian territories, as well as attacks against Israelis by Palestinian militants.
