The Russian army’s lack of progress in the frontline in Ukraine is generating a mounting discontent with the Russian public. The coverage of the problems within the Russia army has prompted the government to suppress any criticism of the ongoing war in Ukraine that is already in its fourth year. The Kremlin has been responding to any criticism of its war in Ukraine with heightened repression and censorship, according to the Institute for the Study of War, ISW. Analysts of the institute note growing internal criticism within Russia’s military community, highlighting systemic problems that limit the effectiveness of the Russian Armed Forces. A prominent Russian military blogger has called for a major expansion of forces and fundamental reforms in the defense industry, warning that without structural changes to troop organization and a move away from small-unit tactics, Russia will struggle to achieve rapid success on the battlefield. The blogger even suggested that, at the current pace of operations, it could take up to 100 years for Russian forces to fully occupy Ukraine. ISW analysts estimate that maintaining the pace of February 2025 would still result in a protracted 83-year campaign. The Institute frames these statements as a potential final attempt to voice criticism before the Kremlin enforces a likely ban on Telegram and forces military bloggers onto state-controlled platforms. The report also highlights a disconnect between President Vladimir Putin’s insistence on continuous pressure along the entire front and the operational realities faced by the Russian army. The Kremlin expects steady advances, yet reforms being implemented by the armed forces and Intelligence Brigades are inconsistent with this strategy. Rising dissatisfaction has been fueled by Ukraine’s successful counteroffensives in the northeast and south, including disputed claims about the capture of Kupiansk, which Russian bloggers have publicly challenged. According to analysts, part of the frustration stems from the Russian army’s lack of adequate preparation for the 2026 spring-summer offensive, which appears to have already commenced. Military analyst Kostiantyn Mashovets noted that the Western Group of Russian forces has not fully prepared for an assault on Lyman, a strategic city key to subsequent operations against Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Without securing Lyman, any northern offensive is unlikely to yield significant results, even if attacks occur later in spring or early summer. On the domestic front, the Kremlin is intensifying pressure on critics. Pro-Kremlin blogger Ilya Remeslo, who openly criticized Putin for leading Russia into a prolonged and economically draining conflict, restricting freedoms, and pursuing endless wars, was reportedly forcibly admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Similar critiques have previously come from Russian ultranationalists like Igor Girkin. ISW notes that censorship measures are being stepped up to push commentators and ordinary users away from platforms outside the Kremlin’s control, such as Telegram, toward state-managed services like Max. The government has already scheduled a nationwide block of Telegram, set to take effect on April 1. Experts anticipate that repression and censorship will continue to escalate as Russia faces mounting operational difficulties on the front line.
