Protests against the Telegram blocking are planned in four Russian cities. All protests are scheduled for March 1. In Voronezh, activists have already been threatened with prosecution for "extremism." Activists from Novosibirsk, Voronezh, Vladivostok, and Irkutsk have submitted applications to hold rallies against the blocking of Telegram in Russia. This was reported by the Astra channel. It is noted that all events are planned to be held on March 1.
In Voronezh, communists are attempting to secure approval for a rally. City hall threatened them with administrative liability "for extremism" and recommended changing the wording of their slogans. Furthermore, the activists were asked personal questions about their studies, their marital status, and their plans. They were also reminded that "someone they know has already been charged with administrative offenses." The organizers stated that they would continue to demand approval.
Representatives of the Communist Party in Novosibirsk also submitted two requests to hold a rally to the mayor’s office. The stated goal of the rally was to express disagreement with decisions to restrict Telegram, as well as with "forcing citizens to use the MAX program." The activists also demanded that the authorities comply with Article 29 of the Russian Constitution and uphold the "fundamental political rights and freedoms of citizens."
In Vladivostok, deputies Alexander Sustov and Oleg Grigoryev filed a notice. According to them, the goal is to "express protest against the government’s economic policies" and to oppose the blocking of the messaging app. A response to the protest application is expected within three days.
Human rights activist Pavel Kharitonenko and Grigory Grebenko, head of the regional branch of the Yabloko party, announced plans to hold a protest in Irkutsk. They stated that the restrictions on the messenger apply not only to private users but also to entrepreneurs. Earlier, activist Denis Bukalov held a protest in the city in support of the messenger, erecting a cardboard cutout of Sergei Mironov, leader of the party A Just Russia, near the regional office of Roskomnadzor, with his quote: "Those who slow down Telegrams are scoundrels!"
As is known, Russia has begun "partially restricting" Telegram within the country. This is causing the service to experience serious disruptions. It is noted that starting today, Roskomnadzor, which previously claimed Telegram was aiding scammers and terrorists, will begin slowing down the messenger.
Meanwhile, the service has been experiencing serious outages for the second day running – the number of user complaints on monitoring services has skyrocketed to 15,000. People are primarily reporting problems loading media files. As a reminder, in August 2025, Russia effectively blocked calls via Telegram and WhatsApp , stating that "messengers are being used en masse by scammers and criminals who are drawing Russians into sabotage and terrorist activities."
Since December, Russians have been complaining en masse about Telegram slowdowns. Furthermore, for many users, the service either stopped opening or was experiencing an endless "connection."
Regarding Telegram, Russian authorities are following the YouTube scenario, gradually introducing restrictions on the messenger, making its use increasingly difficult.
In 2025, Roskomnadzor restricted access to 1.289 million online materials , a 59% increase from the previous year.
