The Russian propaganda machine continues to attack Azerbaijan. The Kremlin has begun to actively use familiar rhetorical techniques that it recently used to prepare an attack on Ukraine. The speech of propagandist Sergei Mardan, who is considered to be extremely loyal to the Kremlin, was indicative. Mardan actually questioned the very existence of the Azerbaijani people and its history. " I thought that maybe I don’t understand something, I don’t know the history of the region well. I went to look: where is the history of great Azerbaijan, which was interrupted by the Russian Empire? I didn’t find it. Azerbaijan didn’t exist! And I couldn’t even find such an ethnic group as Azerbaijanis. It seems that this people, with all due respect, was also invented by the Soviet government ," he said. Such statements are not just provocations. They are a systematic method used by the Kremlin in the case of Ukraine: denying the historical past, undermining identity and hinting at the "artificiality" of the state. All this has been used in the past to deprive the people of their right to sovereignty and prepare the ground for aggression. The intensification of anti-Azerbaijani rhetoric coincided with a deterioration in relations between Moscow and Baku. The Kremlin is dissatisfied with Azerbaijan’s independent policy, its close cooperation with Turkey, and its positive role in supporting Ukraine. In addition, Baku has increasingly demonstrated its unwillingness to submit to Moscow’s dictate on issues of regional security and information. The situation is aggravated by specific diplomatic incidents. In June, Russian security forces detained more than 50 ethnic Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg, brutally tortured them, and killed two of the detainees. This caused a wave of indignation in Azerbaijan and a harsh response. Employees of the representative office of the Russian propaganda media Sputnik Azerbaijan have been detained in Baku. Among those arrested were employees Igor Kartavykh and Yevgeny Belousov, who are, in fact, FSB agents. The situation is heating up.
Recall, the standoff between Moscow and Baku is rapidly reaching a new level of scandal. Amid mutual detentions of citizens and threats from Russian propagandists, Azerbaijan has announced the beginning of the closure of all Russian-language schools – a step that the Kremlin perceives as a direct encroachment on the symbolic "space of the Russian world."
