Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday marked the third anniversary of Russia laying claim to annexed regions in Ukraine with a video address.
According to Associated Press in the address, Putin said Russian forces were fighting to restore the "unity" of Russia’s "historical destiny".
"The entire country, all of Russia, is working and waging a righteous battle. Together, we defend our love for the Motherland and the unity of our historical destiny. We fight and win," he said.
Putin was commemorating Russian operations in the Donbas, Ukraine’s eastern industrial heartland long coveted by the Russian president, and the ‘Novorossiya’ region, the historical term for a swath of southeastern Ukraine.
In recent weeks, Russia has been intensifying its campaign in Ukraine’s east and now controls about 70% of Donetsk, part of the Donbas.
Putin also thanked Russian operatives in the address, calling them "the true heroes of our time."
"I am confident that, thanks to you, Russia’s security will be reliably guaranteed, and long-awaited and lasting peace will return to the heroic lands of Donbas and Novorossiya,” he added.
