As the war in Iran enters its sixth week, residents of Tehran struggle to deal with the strikes in the city that has been heavily targeted. Security checkpoints are seen on the streets and other security personnel have been deployed near governmental offices. At Azadi Square, home to the iconic Azadi Tower, traffic jams are less common than before the war, as schools, universities and many government institutions are closed. “We cannot say the situation is normal,” education manager Zohra Tayefah said on Monday. But “life is going on,” she added, explaining that people adapt and children are taking lessons online, but that would be better if there was no war but rather "peace and compromise.” Monday morning smoke rose near the square after an airstrike hit the Sharif University of Technology.
Later, hundreds of medical staff gathered outside Imam Khomeini Hospital for a sit-in protest against the attacks on medical facilities by the US and Israel. Dr Mariam Nakhostin, an infectious diseases specialist, warned of the consequences for patients if power plants and other facilities are bombed, as US President Donald Trump has threatened. “If we do not have electricity of course it will be very hard, if we do not have drugs to give them, the services maybe collapse,” said Nakhostin. Hours later, Trump said he’s “not at all” concerned about committing possible war crimes and he again threatened to destroy Iran’s bridges and power plants if Tehran does not meet his Tuesday 8 p.m. ET deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters at the White House, the president refused to say whether any civilian targets would be off-limits. Iran on Monday rejected a 45-day ceasefire proposal and said it wants a permanent end to the conflict. “We only accept an end of the war with guarantees that we won’t be attacked again,” Mojtaba Ferdousi Pour, head of the Iranian diplomatic mission in Cairo, told The Associated Press. Meanwhile at Tehran’s opera house, a ceremony was held on Monday to mark 40 days since the killing of 165 people by a US airstrike that also hit an adjacent compound associated with the Revolutionary Guard in Minab, some 1,100 kilometers southeast of the capital of the country. A concert of Persian music was performed during the ceremony attended by Iranian officials.
At night on Sunday, hundreds gathered in Enghelab Square to demonstrate against the US-Israeli offensive and in support of the Iranian government.
Zainab Andarz, a government supporter, has participated in the rallies since 28 February, when the country was attacked and the war erupted.
"Trump will come to hell, and here is the real hell," she said. More than 1,900 people have been killed in Iran since the war began, the government has not updated the toll for days.
