The Caspian Sea is becoming a battleground in the Ukrainian war. A few days ago, Ukraine attacked an oil platform at the Rakushechnoye field—the platform belongs to Lukoil. This isn’t Ukraine’s first attack on Russian facilities in the Caspian Sea. Earlier, reports emerged of a strike on the Filanovsky field and the platform located there. Furthermore, the Russian patrol ship Okhotnik was hit. Ukrainian drones have previously struck platforms at the Filanovsky and Korchagin fields. The Filanovsky field is one of the largest in Russia and its sector of the Caspian Sea, with estimated reserves of 129 million tons of oil and approximately 30 billion cubic meters of gas. Two Russian cargo ships transporting weapons from Iran were also attacked. But most importantly, it was Russia that took the first step toward militarizing the Caspian Sea. This involved, and continues to involve, more than just increasing the combat potential of the Red Banner Caspian Flotilla . As a reminder, Russia launched missiles from the Caspian Sea against targets in Syria. It was over the Caspian Sea, along a narrow neutral corridor, that Russian transport planes carried weapons to Armenia before and during the 44-day War in Azerbaijan. Russian bombers refueled in mid-air over the Caspian Sea, which also launched missiles at targets in Syria. Then, with the onset of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Caspian Fleet launched Kalibr missiles at Ukrainian cities. Another issue is that Moscow’s strategists weren’t expecting a retaliatory strike, much less predicting that "NATO soldiers" wouldn’t appear in the Caspian Sea, while Ukrainian drones would. Ukraine has already attacked the Caspian Fleet base in Kaspiysk, where the flotilla had relocated from Astrakhan. Now they’re targeting platforms and individual ships, including cargo ships. And the most important thing is that Russia can do nothing about it. Moreover, some Caspian Fleet ships have already been redeployed to the Ukrainian front to support the Black Sea Fleet. But the Caspian Sea ships are small; nothing equivalent to the cruiser Moskva has sailed there, so reinforcing the Black Sea Fleet with the Caspian Fleet hasn’t been very successful, while the combat power in the Caspian Sea itself is dwindling. Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmitry Pletenchuk said that Russian army transferred combat units between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and likely launched Kalibr cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea at Ukraine.
