Our main stories tonight:
– Ukraine-Russia talks brokered by the U.S. have kicked off in the United Arab Emirates. Ukraine is under mounting U.S. pressure to reach a peace deal to end the war, with Moscow demanding Kyiv cede the entirety of the Donbas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the territorial dispute will be the top priority of these latest talks.
– In Ukraine, keeping the lights on has become a battle in and of itself. Amid freezing temperatures and nightly attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure, repair crews race against the clock – and the bombs – to restore power. All this while civilians bundle up in shelters, schools shut down, and even the Kyiv Zoo resorts to wood stoves to keep animals alive.
– The World Economic Forum is drawing to a close in Davos, but debates sparked during the event are only just taking off. Across Europe, leaders sound increasingly concerned – warning that the international order the continent has relied on for decades may now be a thing of the past.
