Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said that despite Russia’s attempts to ramp up offensive along the frontline, these intensified attacks are resulting primarily in heavier losses rather than meaningful gains. Zelenskiy noted that Russian forces have failed to meet their own timelines across three key regions. Zelenskiy shared insights from a report delivered by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, which highlighted the lack of progress by Russian troops and the mounting casualties they are sustaining. Despite stepping up assault operations, Russia has been unable to significantly impact Ukrainian defensive or operational capabilities. Describing the battlefield as tense, Zelenskyy emphasized that increased Russian pressure has not translated into success, but instead into greater personnel and equipment losses. He pointed out that Moscow has fallen short of its objectives in the border areas of Sumy and Kharkiv, as well as in the Donetsk region, forcing it to delay its plans. On the southern front, Ukrainian forces continue to carry out their missions effectively. Zelenskiy expressed appreciation for the efforts of soldiers and officers engaged in these counterattacks, while also confirming discussions with Syrskyi regarding long-range strike strategies. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military is advancing in a coordinated offensive in the Oleksandrivske direction. In a relatively short time frame, Ukrainian forces have reclaimed over 400 square kilometers of territory, pushing forward simultaneously toward Oleksandrivske and Huliaipole. The General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces reports that nearly all of the Dnipropetrovsk region has been brought back under Ukrainian control. Air Assault Forces further stated that nine settlements have been liberated during operations in the Oleksandrivske direction, with three additional areas fully cleared of Russian troops. At the same time, analysts from Institute for the Study of War suggest that these successful Ukrainian counterattacks in the south could undermine Russia’s broader plans for a spring–summer 2026 offensive. Russia has recently stepped up offensive across multiple sections of the front line, with the main target being eastern Donetsk region by deploying small, expendable infantry groups, they aim to strain Ukraine’s ability to rotate troops and maintain defensive cohesion.
