Russian troops are marching over a “carpet of corpses” as they try to reach the chaotic salient northeast of the fortress city of Pokrovsk. The Russians aim to extend the salient north and west in order to surround Pokrovsk. The Ukrainians aim to stop them in order to forestall a wider Russian advance toward the twin cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Conditions are nightmarish for both sides. The Russians have more troops but the Ukrainians have control of the air thanks to thousands of tiny drones. The twin cities, combined population 400,000, are the next major objectives for the Russian Center Group of Forces, whose 150,000 troops outnumber the local Ukrainian corps five to one. But there are good reasons to believe the march won’t be an easy one. If it took the Russians a year and tens of thousands of casualties to capture Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, it may take them even longer—and cost even more—to even begin contesting Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. According to captured Russian documents, nearly 87,000 Russian troops died between January and September this year as Russia’s wider war on Ukraine ground toward its fifth year. Another 160,000 were wounded, many badly—and 34,000 went missing, most of whom are probably dead. That’s more 30,000 casualties a month, or 1,000 a day. Drones kill soldiers even in the trenches Roughly in line with official Ukrainian estimates that some observers wrongly insisted were inflated. Unsurprisingly, the three main field armies trying to capture the fortress city of Pokrovsk. The Center Grouping of Forces—which oversees the 2nd, 41st and 51st Combined Arms Armies among other formations—lost around 104,000 men and likely a few women, at least 47,000 of whom are dead. The Russian command keeps feeding the battlefield with hundreds of men every day to prevent Ukraine from reclaiming terrain, while the Ukrainians must continue suppressing these waves.
