The Russian occupation and subsequent annexation of Crimea in 2014 was overseen by the Second Service of the FSB, former FSB officer Alexander Fedotov told Russian journalists. According to him, the special service not only monitored the situation in the region but also organized a "referendum" on the status of the Crimean peninsula, which was subsequently unrecognized by Ukraine and Western countries. Much of this information contradicts claims by Russian authorities and Russian propaganda that the annexation of Crimea was based on the will of its residents.
Alexander Fedotov claims to be a former employee of the FSB’s Second Service. He currently lives abroad, where he moved after, as he claims, resigning from the intelligence agency. This was verified by journalists from the Russian project The Insider , to whom Alexander Fedotov gave an interview.
The agency he refers to has not publicly responded to these claims, nor has it confirmed or denied his affiliation with the FSB.
The FSB’s second service, known in Russia as the "secret police," is responsible for persecuting, among other things, Russian opposition figures, the publication notes. In his testimony, a former FSB officer mentions the service’s involvement in Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, something previously unknown.
His words refute the claims of Russian propaganda and Russian President Vladimir Putin that the majority of Crimeans allegedly sincerely supported the "annexation of the peninsula to Russia" and that their opinion was the basis for it.
According to the former FSB officer, the annexation of Crimea in 2014 was the result of a special operation by Russian intelligence services and security forces, not the free will of Crimeans.
During the Euromaidan, officers from the FSB’s Second Service were sent to Crimea, led by Lieutenant General Alexander Tachko , who had previously "proven his loyalty" in Syria, according to Alexander Fedotov.
According to him, the "referendum" on Crimea’s status was organized through "corrupt employees" of local administrations with the help of "a well-known criminal figure" Sergei Aksyonov , and Alexander Tachko performed an "organizational and control function" in this process.
Alexander Fedotov also names Igor Girkin-Strelkov as a former member of the FSB’s Second Service , but he allegedly resigned six months before Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
Girkin-Strelkov previously confirmed his participation in the events of the "Crimean Spring" and claimed that voting in the "referendum" in Crimea was not voluntary.
"Members of the Crimean ‘self-defense’ combined regiments, consisting of local residents and mercenaries, but not in Russian Armed Forces uniforms, essentially forced the population to participate in a ‘referendum.’ People generally wanted to stay away from this issue, to stay home. Because it was unclear what would happen tomorrow, and no one wanted these changes in this form. If we’re saying that all of Crimea wanted to return to its ‘home harbour,’ then no, that’s not true. People were told that Crimea would remain part of Russia regardless. We would put anyone who didn’t vote on a separate register, that there would be consequences, and that they had to go vote," he says.
