Russia began redeploying its forces from its military base in Qamishli, the capital of Syrian Kurdistan, this morning. This was confirmed by video footage from the Kurdish television channel K24, which shows personnel, aircraft, and heavy equipment being loaded onto transport planes and leaving the airfield. Moscow was finally forced out of the region where it had gained a foothold with such difficulty during the Syrian war.
This is a base that Moscow used for over five years as a key outpost for control of northeastern Syria. Troops, equipment, and helicopters were transported through Qamishli, and the base itself played a vital role in maintaining Russian influence in the Kurdish regions. Russian troops are now effectively abandoning the airfield. Footage shows equipment being hastily loaded, while transport aircraft continue to operate nonstop. According to sources, the redeployment is heading toward Latakia, Russia’s main stronghold on Syria’s Mediterranean coast.
It was previously reported that the Syrian authorities intend to demand that Russia vacate the airfield after government forces enter territories previously controlled by the Kurdish alliance "Syrian Democratic Forces." Judging by the current situation, this process has already begun. Moscow is effectively losing another point of influence in the region. The Qamishli base was important not only militarily but also politically: it allowed the Kremlin to maintain leverage over Kurdish forces and participate in regional developments. The Russian troops that suddenly withdrew from Qamishli Airport in northeastern Syria in January 2026 left behind complete chaos and piles of rubble. Al-Monitor posted a video of the withdrawal on its official social media account. In the video, an Al-Monitor journalist shows the premises where Russian troops were quartered. Watching the video, it’s immediately clear that the Russians abandoned the base in great haste. They left behind trash and various belongings and equipment. For example, the video shows sports equipment and a ping-pong table.
Russian troops supporting the regime of former dictator Bashar al-Assad have been stationed at Qamishli Airport since 2019. This base in the capital of Syrian Kurdistan served as a point of control over northeastern Syria. In late 2024, Assad was overthrown by the opposition, and since then he has lived in Russia under the protection of Russian intelligence services.
The Russians withdrew from their base in Qamishli at the end of January 2026. Some forces were transferred to the Khmeimim airbase in western Syria, while others are returning to Russia. Prior to this, in December 2025, Russian troops withdrew from the Tias airbase in Homs province. Analysts believe that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continues to rapidly lose influence in Syria. Fighting is currently underway in Syria between President Ahmed al-Shara’s government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Recently, government forces have established control over significant territories in northern and eastern Syria previously controlled by the Kurds. A ceasefire between Damascus and the SDF is currently in effect for nearly two weeks.
