The choke point of the global oil trade – the Strait of Hormuz – has now been shut for more than five weeks, and with each passing day, hopes of a breakthrough are fading. In the Persian Gulf, the consequences are no longer abstract. They are measured in stranded ships, mounting costs, and crews who simply want to go home. Germany’s largest shipping company, Hapag-Lloyd, is among those caught in the standoff. Six of its vessels are effectively trapped in the Gulf, unable to transit the narrow waterway controlled by Iran – a strategic artery through which a fifth of the world’s oil normally flows. But even more concerning are the 150 sailors who are stuck on their boats. "Five and a half weeks in a war zone is something relatively new. And of course, these are difficult days and weeks for the colleagues. We were able to exchange some in the meantime, but you can easily imagine that after such a time, monotony sets in on board. The most important thing in this situation is to maintain ‘team spirit’," Hapag-Lloyd spokesman, Nils Haupt, told The Associated Press. His company is in contact with the captains and crews at least once a day. They ask how the crew is doing and what they can do to help. What is very important to the crews is that, thanks to modern satellite technology, they are able to facilitate communication with their families, Haupt says. But the situation on the Hapag-Lloyd ships is not a blueprint for all 20 000 seamen stranded in the Gulf. Irina Haesler from the German Shipowner’s Association says that it is especially mentally hard for the sailors. So far, the food supply chain is still functioning. Resupply operations got underway quickly after the war began but prices for drinking water are going up. "Normally, the food arrives when the ships are docked in the harbour and is then delivered there. At the moment, this isn’t possible because the ships aren’t in the harbour; they’re out in open water. Smaller ships come there with pallets of food on board.
