Sudanese rebels have shot down a Russian Il-76 military aircraft over Babanusaa, West Kordofan, killing all passengers on board. The downing of the aircraft was carried out by the Rapid Support Forces, RSF, a paramilitary group under the command of Sudan’s military leader and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo, known as Hemedti. Video footage of the crash have been shared in social media platforms. The first debris indicates the use of a Chinese FK-2000 comprehensive air defence system, according to media reports. This was not the first incident of Ilyushin Il-76 being downed in Sudan. In October last year, a civilian Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane carrying cargo for the Rapid Support Forces rebels was mistakenly shot by the RSF themselves in North Darfur region. The RSF mistook the aircraft for an aircraft bomber used by the Sudanese government forces. The Ilyushin Il-76 is a large, four-engine turbofan military transport aircraft developed in the Soviet Union and is capable of operating from unpaved runways and in harsh weather conditions, making it highly versatile. It should be noted that the RSF is a paramilitary group in Sudan that has been involved in significant conflicts, including a civil war against the Sudanese Armed Forces.
