Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Friday that it had shot down a US F-35 fighter aircraft over central Iran, as reported by Mehr News Agency. This was the second time Iran claimed downing a US F-35 fighter jet since the start of joint US-Israeli Epic Fury military action in late February. According to a message shared on Telegram by Fars News, which is affiliated with the IRGC, the jet was entirely destroyed upon the strike, leaving no clear details about the pilot’s condition due to the extent of the wreckage. Mehr further suggested that the force of the explosion likely prevented the pilot from ejecting safely. Photos circulating on Telegram showed fragments of the wreckage, including one image that seemed to display the words “US Air Forces in Europe” on what appeared to be part of the aircraft’s tail. So far, U.S. Central Command, CENTCOM, responsible for military operations in the region, has neither confirmed nor denied the incident. Iran had earlier claimed to have shot down a US F-35 fighter jet on March 23. However, this claim was rebuffed by the CENTCOM. Friday’s claim surfaced shortly after US President Donald Trump made remarks indicating that the United States had not yet fully escalated its actions against Iran, following a reported strike on a key bridge in Karaj. In a post on Truth Social earlier in the week, Trump warned that additional infrastructure targets, such as bridges and power facilities, could be hit. The F-35 is known for its stealth technology and ability to operate undetected in highly defended airspace. Any successful strike against such an aircraft would challenge perceptions of U.S. aerial superiority. Meanwhile, the television channel in Iran’s Kohkilouyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces initially urged viewers who see Americans to “shoot them as soon as you see them.” Then it changed the instructions, saying police want Iranians to hand over any downed American pilots alive to security agencies to “receive a precious prize.” A major explosion from an airstrike struck Iran’s capital, Tehran, around the same time Friday afternoon. It wasn’t clear what had been hit. Earlier Friday, Iranian missiles set alight a refinery and damaged a desalination plant in Kuwait. The war now entering its sixth week is destabilizing economies around the world as Iran responds to the U.S. and Israeli attacks by targeting the Gulf region’s energy infrastructure and tightening its grip on oil and natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict currently underway between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other began on February 28, 2026, with a massive, carefully coordinated series of air raids. These strikes focused on key Iranian military sites, nuclear installations, and top leadership figures. Within just a few hours, hundreds of attacks were carried out, culminating in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader and several senior officials, in what has been described as one of the most significant escalations in the region in decades.
