There are growing signs of a rift within the Kremlin’s highest echelons of power. Officials are dissatisfied with the war against Ukraine , economic problems, and increased restrictions, particularly on the internet, The Washington Post reports. It is noted that former Russian lawyer and Z-propagandist Ilya Remeslo previously engaged in attacks on the opposition and collaborated with the administration of Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin. However, he recently publicly spoke out against the Russian authorities and called on Putin to resign, calling him a war criminal. After this, Remeslo was sent to a psychiatric hospital in St. Petersburg. He was released after just 30 days, which is unusual for the Kremlin, which keeps its critics in prison for years. After his release from the psychiatric hospital, Remeslo told reporters that he would continue his public fight against Putin. He assured them that this was "his life’s work." In a conversation with journalists, Remeslo emphasized that the scale of discontent among the Russian elite is colossal. "I get the impression that part of the system is already starting to work against Putin… Essentially… it’s similar to what happened at the end of the Soviet Union, when people hated the Communist Party and did everything they could to abolish it. Putin’s Russia will follow the same path as the Soviet Union. Everything is repeating itself," Remeslo said.
Opposition figure Mikhail Khodorkovsky also expressed confidence in a conversation with journalists that the release of a longtime Putin supporter from a psychiatric hospital could indicate support from some Kremlin elites. "There’s an absolutely obvious conflict between the presidential administration and the FSB’s Second Directorate. These guys have been given a lot of power and have started tightening the screws really hard. The presidential administration is trying to somehow make it clear to Putin that the situation could spiral out of control," Khodorkovsky said. Earlier, politician and diplomat Roman Bessmertny stated that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin doesn’t care what happens to the people or the troops on May 9—his primary concern is protecting himself. However, he added, it’s clear the mood in the Kremlin on the eve of May 9 is somewhat alarming. Bessmertny believes that the current situation is a stalemate for Putin, and therefore his choice is very difficult. "He’s really only concerned about his life and his fate, not what will happen directly in the parade columns. Although it’s clear that military events have already been cancelled in regional centers. Secondly, the capacity for holding naval parades in St. Petersburg has been curtailed, and in Sevastopol, they’ve been cancelled altogether, and there will be no events there," Bessmertny said on Radio NV.
The situation appears to be that during a conversation between Donald Trump and Putin, where three-quarters of the conversation was devoted to the situation in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, the Kremlin leader "still, out of fear, out of concern, raised the issue of a ceasefire these days," the expert says. At the same time, Ukraine emphasized that Moscow is playing out the need to regroup troops in preparation for the next offensive operations. "And all of this, in fact, gives an absolutely clear understanding that the current situation is a stalemate for the Moscow Tsar, and therefore his choice is very, very difficult," the diplomat believes. Bezsmertny added that Putin will likely seek help, including from the President of the United States of America. "In this regard, what Peskov and others close to the Moscow tyrant are now saying demonstrates that this situation worries them. It worries them more than ever, because the Kremlin has no way to prevent all this with its air and missile defense forces. It’s already clear that the sophistication of Ukrainian technology allows them to bypass this system," the expert concluded.
