Three members of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force died Tuesday after a tank shell exploded at a training range in southern Japan.
According to Associated Press the accident happened at the GSDF’s Hijudai training range, which stretches across multiple towns in Oita Prefecture.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told reporters in Tokyo that a tank shell exploded in a Type 10 Main Battle Tank’s turret during a training session.
The chief of staff of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force said four personnel were on board – three tank crew members accompanied by a safety instructor.
GSDF is investigating the cause of the explosion.
