Ludmila Djuly, former Junior Doctor at Pripyat Hospital, recalls the chaos: “We worked completely unprotected. No gloves, no respirators, nothing.” Responders stayed at their posts for hours, treating patients who sufferered severe burns.
Aleksander Grigorash, Head of Commissioning at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, warns today’s threats the plant faces from Russian shelling go beyond historical ones. “What happened was an act of nuclear terrorism,” he says, stressing the need for strict safety protocols.
For Mariya Zagorna, Chornobyl settler, the city remains home. “I feel best in Chernobyl. I love my land.”
