Russia’s long and costly battle for Pokrovsk has ended in disaster. Despite deploying more than 110,000 troops during its 2025 Summer Offensive, Moscow’s forces failed to capture the critical Donetsk city. Ukrainian defenders not only held their ground but reportedly eliminated nearly 14,000 Russian soldiers between August 21 and early October, including over 8,400 killed and 5,400 wounded.
Ukraine’s drone and artillery dominance shattered Russia’s campaign, destroying armor, supply lines, and command posts across the Pokrovsk sector. Even desperate measures—such as sending ill soldiers to the front—couldn’t alter the outcome. The collapse of Russia’s offensive marks one of the most significant defeats of the war, leaving Putin’s strategy in disarray as autumn rains settle over Donbas.
